New InternMatch Study Shows Interns Increasingly Interested in Passion and Experience.
Students frustrated by job prospects and the lack of paid internships say they are less interested with interning at brand name businesses and instead are applying to smaller organizations and non-profits where they have a greater opportunity to explore an industry and their own potential.
SEATTLE, WA, April 21, 2010 /University PR News/ -- "Students are seizing on the abundance of unpaid internships to experiment with learning, growing or even reinventing themselves," according to InternMatch.com CMO and co-founder Nathan Parcells. The number of students expected to intern this year has incr eased by 4% since last year, the number of unpaid positions is expected to increase by an even greater 8%.
"Students are seizing on the abundance of unpaid internships to experiment with learning, growing or even reinventing themselves," according to InternMatch.com CMO and co-founder Nathan Parcells.
Parcells says, "Internships have essentially become a pre-requisite for entry level jobs, so naturally the competition for well compensated positions has increased. With the market for such positions getting smaller many students are looking for positions that offer an experience they wouldn't get in a larger, more typical office. "
Kristin Hillmann a senior at the University of Washington interested in event planning interviewed at the Washington Technology and Industries Association after finding it difficult to land a for-profit position that truly interested her. Kristin says, "I have really learned the benefits and the power of an internship at a non-profit organization. After only a month here, they've given me full control of projects I feel a bigger company intern would never have access to."
Increased competition and dwindling paid opportunities in the for-profit sector may tie to a larger change in student thinking about the importance of experiential learning and pursuing fulfilling work. Roda Barkett, a University of Washington student, who previously interned at Boeing expressed an interest in finding a smaller internship program for her next position. "I like to bring tangible value to an organization and at a non-profit organization or even a small company it is easier to find that."
