Panel reveals personal stories relating to "don't ask, don't tell" policy on April 22 at Alliant International University
The event is free and open to the public.
SAN DIEGO, CA, April 08, 2010 /University PR News/ -- Alliant International University President's Lecture Series will present "Asking and Telling: Real-life stories behind 'Don't Ask Don't Tell' Military Policy" featuring a speakers panel of former service men and women on Thursday, April 22 from 6-9pm at Zable Hall on the Alliant campus. The event is free and open to the public.
The Asking and Telling event will give the panelists an opportunity to tell their story and paint a rich picture of the lives, values and struggles they endured while serving in the military under the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) policy. In addition, the evening will include legal updates on DADT, a screening of "Coming out Under Fire," a 15- minute movie that details the issues relating to being openly gay in the military, and a Q & A with the panel.
"We are not taking a stance one way or the other on the policy itself. Rather we plan on addressing the complexities of an individual's 'coming out" decisions as they relate to the military environment, as well as the concrete and psychological impact of the policy on individuals and families," explains Dr. Matthew Porter of Alliant California School of Professional Psychology and I-MERIT, who will serve as the event moderator.
I-MERIT (International and Multicultural Education, Research, Intervention, and Training) program serves as the home for the University's diversity initiatives. Other sponsors of the event include the San Diego Rockway Queer Alliance Student Group and the California School of Professional Psychology.
