SEG Research Confirms Students Learn More Using Products that Present Content Using Both Words and Pictures

Multiple product effectiveness studies conducted by SEG since 2008 confirm that learning is most effective when instruction includes both images and text.

NEW HOPE, PA April 22, 2010 /University PR News/ -- New Hope, PA April 20, 2010- SEG Research (www.segmeasurement.com), a leading provider of product effectiveness research services, today announced the findings of several studies confirming that educational products are most effective when they include both words and images.

"These studies show that students in classes using products with graphically enhanced content show greater gains in language skills and science content knowledge than students in classes that did not make use of these products" according to Scott Elliot, President of SEG. "These results underscore the importance of conducting controlled effectiveness studies." added Elliot

In one study, grade 3, 5 and 8th grade students in classes using BrainPOP, an animated web-based product, showed greater gains in language, reading and science skills than a comparable group of students in classes that did not have access to BrainPOP. In a second study, students in higher education classes using the Wiley Visualizing Series of graphically enhanced science textbooks showed greater gains in science content knowledge and skills than students in classes that did not use the Wiley Visualizing Series. Links to the full studies are provided at the SEG website: www.segmeasurement.com.

"Educational publishers, technology providers, and service providers have responded to pressures from schools and government funding agencies to provide evidence that their solutions are effective" said Elliot. "Many schools have less money to spend and are looking to spend those limited resources on proven solutions."
