Mary N. Muchiri Honored by Cambridge Who's Who

Mary N. Muchiri hopes to help more Kenyan girls receive the necessary funding for attending college

UPLAND, IN, November 18, 2010 /University PR News/ -- Mary N. Muchiri, Associate Professor of English at Taylor University, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in higher education.

Focusing on linguistics, literature and women's issues, Ms. Muchiri is an associate professor of English. She has been employed at Taylor University for the past 10 years. In her position, she is responsible for preparing for and instructing college classes, as well as grading students' papers.

She is successful because of the support she received from her family; at a time when most men in Africa did not believe in the education of women, her father held a dissenting opinion and encouraged her professional growth. Ms. Muchiri is grateful not only for this, but also for the encouragement she received from her teachers.

She is proud to have helped one student in Kenya, who passed her high school exams with distinction, but could not afford to attend college. With Ms. Muchiri's aid, funds were raised, and the student obtained an undergraduate degree. Eventually, she was able to save enough money to pursue a master's degree. After she graduated, she formed her own company. Ms. Muchiri aims to raise funds for more poor, yet intelligent Kenyan girls to attend colleges.

She is the recipient of a Bachelor of Arts in English literature, a postgraduate diploma in education, and a Master of Arts in instructing English to speakers of other languages. She also holds a Ph.D. in applied linguistics from the University of Lancaster. She is affiliated with the National Council of Teachers of English, the International Association for the Promotion of Christian Higher Education, and American Christian Writers. Ms. Muchiri has also been honored with a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship. Her goal is to complete a research project and become a full professor.
