Susan Madison Smith recognized for excellence in educational public health and safety

BLOOMINGTON, IN, March 25, 2010 /University PR News/ -- Susan Madison Smith, Ed.D., MSPH, Associate Professor of Safety and Health Education and Director of the OSHA Heartland Training Institute and Education Center at Indiana University, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of educational health and safety.

Susan Madison Smith, Ed.D., MSPH, serves as an associate professor of safety and health education, and the director of the Heartland OSHA Training Institute and Education Center at Indiana University. She teaches graduate courses in injury prevention, research and emergency preparedness. Her research focuses on improved emergency preparedness and the evacuation of high-risk groups. Prior to her move to Indiana University in August 2009, Dr. Smith served at the University of Tennessee (UT) for 13 years as the graduate coordinator of safety and health programs and the director of the UT Safety Center, and taught courses in safety, research and emergency management.

Dr. Smith's recent publications include an award-winning paper entitled "Disaster Response: Community Mental Health Service Capacity in the United States," presented in 2008, and several journal articles published in 2009 in the International Journal of Emergency Management.

Fueled by a love for her profession, a commitment to safety and public health, and a desire to pass her knowledge on to others, Dr. Smith firmly supports the immersion of students in service learning programs with organizations in the community. "Students learn more when they are working in teams on a real problem and learning to work as a team in the community," she remarks. In the past two years, Dr. Smith and her students have worked on service projects to improve the safety, security and emergency responses of rural health clinics, hospitals and small businesses. In 2009, Dr. Smith traveled to visit a doctoral student in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to learn more about the surveillance system used to record fatalities in the UAE and to determine if a difference exists between the causes of accidental death between citizens and non-citizens from countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Iran working in the UAE. As a part of this research trip, Dr. Smith and her student met with individuals responsible for health education and injury reduction at the UAE Ministry of Health, and those working in these same areas at the Sharjah, Al-Alain and Dubai Ministries of Health in the UAE.

Dr. Smith received a doctor of education in health education with a specialization in safety from the University of Tennessee, a master of science in public health focused on environmental management and participatory planning from the University of North Carolina School of Public Health, and a bachelor of science with majors in biology and chemistry from Berry College. She holds a level III certification in homeland security, and is a member and former board representative of both the National Safety Council and the International Emergency Society. Dr. Smith was chosen as Cambridge Publishing's 2008 Professional of the Year in Educational Public Health and Safety and will be featured in its "Top 101 Industry Experts" in 2009. Such honors are reserved for Cambridge's most valued professional members.
