Michael R. Summers Honored for Accomplishments in Higher Education
Michael R. Summers draws on extensive field experience and elite FBI training as a criminal justice professor at Erie Community College
WILLIAMSVILLE, NY, September 10, 2010 /University PR News/ -- Michael R. Summers, Professor of Criminal Justice at Erie Community College, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of higher education.
A 41-year veteran of law enforcement, Michael R. Summers brings a wealth of practical experience to Erie Community College. Respected for his expertise in crime scene investigation, he shares his knowledge and unique perspective to students as chairman and professor of the criminal justice department. Mr. Summers spent more than two decades in the field, serving as a police officer with the Buffalo and Amherst Police Departments. In the 1980s, he was declared "Police Officer of the Year" by both Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and the newspaper Amherst Bee. He was summoned as an expert witness for many criminal cases and served in the District Attorney's office prior to entering the academy in 1991.
Mr. Summers takes his role as an educator very seriously, and considers fully arming his students with the skills that they need to be the most vital aspect of his work. As a curriculum developer, he instituted a crime scene technology certificate program at Erie Community College and wrote two grants for the college totaling more than $100,000 for equipment within the criminal justice department. He plans to develop and conduct online courses in the near future.
An alumnus of Empire State College, Mr. Summers holds master's and bachelor's degrees in criminal justice. He also completed training at the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy - one of only 1 percent of sworn officers in the world to be admitted to the program. He remains involved with the agency as a member of FBI National Academy Associates.
