Dr. Mary Berg manages transfusion services for a tertiary care academic medical center
AURORA, CO, June 30, 2011 /University PR News/ -- Dr. Mary Berg, Medical Director of Transfusion Services for University of Colorado Hospital, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in pathology.
During the course of the past 13 years, Dr. Berg has perfected her skills in the complementary areas of medical administration and patient care. She is proud to lend her talents to University of Colorado Hospital, a magnet hospital listed by the U.S. News & World Report among the country's top 100 medical centers. In her present capacity as director of transfusion services, Dr. Berg is noted for her expertise in donor center management and medical education. She is responsible for overseeing transfusion services for a tertiary care academic medical center, ensuring that regulatory requirements are met, and maintaining appropriate blood inventory for solid organ and stem cell transplant, trauma, burn, and high-risk obstetric patients, and patients undergoing emergent and elective surgery.
Prior to assuming her current position in 2008, Dr. Berg worked for the University of Arizona Medical Center and the Denver Health Medical Center. She attributes her success to her father, who told her, "You can go anywhere you want to go, do anything you want to do, be anything you want to be. All you have to do is try.
"
Dr. Berg obtained an MD in 1991 from the Medical College of Wisconsin. She earned certifications in anatomic and clinical pathology and blood banking and transfusion medicine in 1997 after completing a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology and a fellowship in blood banking and transfusion medicine at Case Western Reserve/University Hospitals of Cleveland. Her professional affiliations include the Colorado Association for Continuing Medical Laboratory Education, South Central Association of Blood Banks, AABB, American Society for Clinical Pathology, College of American Pathologists, International Society for Blood Transfusion, and Phi Beta Kappa. In five years, Dr. Berg aspires to work in the clinical laboratory of an academic medical center, hopefully as a full professor.
